Watch Out Wednesday: HauteLegs

Thanks to Kate Middleton, legwear is chicer than ever – and is definitely a staple in the modern woman’s wardrobe. Yet, they can be notoriously difficult to shop for. They can also be difficult to wear; they snag, run, and are either too cheaply made or too much of a splurge.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Riding the wave of subscription boxes to hit the fashion world, HauteLegs sends stylist-curated packages of exclusively designed tights, leggings, hosiery, and socks every month directly to their subscribers.

Third Wave Fashion spoke with Monica Pratap, CEO and Founder of HauteLegs, to learn about the story behind the company.

TWF: What inspired the two of you to start HauteLegs?

MP: Personally, tights and leggings are two of my favorite garments – they’re so versatile and are a great way to add interest to an outfit. Tights snag and run, and legging patterns are constantly evolving. Whether it was in pursuit of the newest pattern or because last months pairs snagged, I found myself regularly shopping for these items. I began to find it difficult and time consuming to find tights and leggings that were truly reflective of my personal style and available at an affordable price-point. We created HauteLegs as a solution to this problem. HauteLegs is a fun and simple to have affordable, on-trend legwear shipped to you monthly.

TWF: What value does HauteLegs have that makes it stand out against other startups in the space?

MP: HauteLegs combines the need of a wardrobe essential with the desire to be trendy and fashion-forward.  At HauteLegs we fulfill the need for a constant supply of disposable legwear (tights and hosiery) but our primary focus is to enable our customers to stay on-trend and in-season, providing subscribers with legwear (leggings included) that are fun, fashionable and exciting to wear.

TWF: What has been the hardest obstacle in the process of building the company? What has been your favorite part?

MP: So far the most challenging process has been building back-end systems that work seamlessly together to create a platform that can expand with our growing subscriber base. Our website is undergoing a pretty serious redesign in the next month, with an epic photoshoot, video, style tips and lots of other fun features. Prepare to see a lot more from us and expect a user experience that’s more evocative of our products; glamorous, provocative and unique.

Our favorite part of the business has been when people gift a HauteLegs subscription, we see the gift notes before they’re sent out and some of them are so sweet and adorable- they make me blush! They also make me wish that I had a boyfriend awesome enough to send me some HauteLegs!

TWF: Do you have any advice to entrepreneurs starting a new fashion tech company?

MP: Work with a product that you love; your passion about whatever that product or service is will come through and your consumers will find themselves trusting you and your business more.  Don’t be afraid to share your voice, appealing to everyone is nice in theory but driving unqualified traffic to your website doesn’t do much good.  If your voice is stronger and more defined you’ll find yourself attracting qualified consumers that convert to customers.
