Commonly in the fashion, the industry looks at trend predictions and then tells consumers what products to buy. Fashion tech startup Preeline is striving to create a platform where consumers and brands can directly effect each other by establishing trends together. We like this idea! Recently we learned more from PreeLine’s COO & Co-founder Julia Macalaster:
PreeLine is social media platform where members can see, share, and socialize future fashions that have yet to arrive in stores with their friends and fashion experts. It is both a place where you can connect with designers on a deeper level by seeing their inspiration and a place where you can socialize with your friends in an environment that is free of any advertising. It’s a platform where the members set the trends.
What inspired you to start PreeLine?
David Lamer, CEO and Co-founder of PreeLine, is the pioneer of the merchandise planning model widely used by the fashion industry today. One day he was waiting in line at a Starbucks when he looked up and noticed that everyone in front of him had their heads buried in their phones. As someone who was always looking at future merchandise, he realized that there was a real opportunity to capture this active audience by asking the consumer what they want before products arrive in stores. He realized that brands could build their relationship with their consumers by allowing them to peek behind the curtain to see what they are thinking of bringing to stores for future collections. Henceforth the seed of inspiration began to germinate.
What has been the hardest obstacle for you in creating PreeLine?
Making the site simple and seamless to use. We are continually speaking with our consumers to see what features they use, which ones they don’t, and where they are getting stuck.
What has been your favorite part?
Seeing the excitement on a new member’s face when they talk about PreeLine. There is something very special about having the ability to see merchandise before it arrives in stores. It allows you to claim it before anyone else. The other night I was walking with my friend and her face lit up when she saw a Phillip Lim billboard displaying the same top that she had saved to her PreeLine two months ago. “I PreeLined that!” she excitedly exclaimed. Seeing this has been my favorite part of building the company.
What does the PreeLine team do for fun?
We go to breakfast at Bubby’s every Friday with our whole team. It’s a great way to enjoy each other’s company away from the desk while enjoying the best pancakes in town. Ironically, health is a standard conversation topic around the table.
What can we expect from PreeLine in the future?
PreeLine is going to change the way we look at the retail industry. By democratizing the process and giving the consumer a vote we plan to take down the walls that exist between brands and their consumers. This is something huge to look forward to in the future.
