This startup creates innovative wearable tech for women to track their health and wellness, while also providing functions for the different stages of a woman’s life. Their LEAF wearable looks like nothing else we’ve seen–in a good way! We caught up with Bellabeat’s co-founder and CCO Urska Srsen to tell us more.
Bellabeat is a company made up of a group of young professionals who are changing the way women take care of their health. Bellabeat’s mission is to help women lead a healthier and balanced life.
What inspired you to create Bellabeat?
I was greatly inspired by my mother’s 30 years of experience as a PhD OB/GYN in prenatal care. Her drive to relentlessly work on bettering the care for women in public healthcare systems made me realize how frustrating it is when some of the problems the patients and the care providers are facing, could easily be solved with the widely available technology and proper education.
Tell us about the LEAF.
The LEAF is a beautiful piece of jewelry that tracks your activity, sleep, stress and menstrual cycle and provides solutions within the app on your smartphone.
How did you come up with idea for the LEAF?
I’ve always been very sporty and health oriented through all my life. When the first wearables came out, I was amongst the early adopters. I was disappointed though when the products did not offer me anything outside of fitness tracking which was especially frustrating when my life was taken over by work and it became harder and harder to maintain the level of activity I would like to be doing. I wanted something beautiful and seamless.
What was your greatest challenge when making the LEAF and what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned so far?
It’s always challenging making an innovative hardware product and trying to push it through the mass production and then to bring it into the customer’s hands.
The most important lesson I’ve learned was that a company’s unique idea is the most valuable thing about their product. You should never compromise on the things that make you different from the rest.
How do you differentiate yourself from existing/potential players in the wearable tech market?
We are a women oriented company that designs our products in a modern and elegant way using natural materials. We are also focus on helping women to lead a healthier life.
LEAF is specifically designed for women–how big is the market at the moment, and where do you see it heading?
The market is huge and growing, moving from fitness oriented early adopters to casual people interested in tracking their health. People are becoming more aware of their health, and it’s a good thing. Products like the LEAF are here to help people, or in our case women, to have an overview of their health.
Where can we buy your product and what is the cost?
Our products are available through our website and other major online retailers. The cost of the LEAF is $119 for the Silver Edition and $149 for the Rose Gold edition.
Where do you see Bellabeat in the future? Do you have any specific ideas about future products or segments you would like to target?
The thing I can tell you right now is that we plan on covering a wide range of devices for tracking women’s health through every stage of their life. Right now we are working on the second generation of our first product, which was a pregnancy monitor. The new edition is going to be a pregnancy and baby monitor using non invasive technology–the SHELL. We’ll announce more information soon on our social media.
