We must say, this smartwatch is really, really good looking. Huawei has created a smartwatch that does notifications, and also includes sensors to be paired with fitness tracking apps. International Business Times called it “The best Android Wear smartwatch so far.” We talked with Yanyan Ji, from Huawei Device USA, who told us more about how they’re making it happen.
Huawei is a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider and its Consumer Business Group is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Huawei has been operating in the US market for more than a decade and within the past two years launched its own, self-branded products.
Huawei is focused on giving consumers the best mobile experience. From smartphones to wearables to tablets, our growing U.S. portfolio brings consumers more choice, more innovation and more value. Huawei products are available unlocked through our own e-commerce channel, GetHuawei.com, and retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg.
Tell us about the Huawei Watch.
Huawei Watch is unlike any smartwatch available today. It redefines smart by blending timeless, uncompromising watch design with the functionality of Android Wear.
It looks smart, because it’s inspired by classic, high-end watch design and executed with the most sophisticated materials. Huawei Watch is first and foremost a watch, with an always-on screen so users instantly know what time it is.
Huawei Watch acts smart because it’s powered by the latest version of Android Wear, enabling the watch to connect to a user’s Android or iOS smartphone. Once connected, they can receive all the notifications they’d normally get on their phone, directly to their watch. No need to constantly take their phone out of their pocket – a user’s Huawei Watch will display notifications for calls, messages, email and social updates.
Huawei Watch also includes activity sensors and a heart rate monitor that sync with a user’s favorite fitness tracking apps, the ability to use voice commands, record reminders, and so much more. It’s a stylish, convenient and discreet way to stay connected in a person’s daily life.
With eight styles to choose from, and more than 1500 watch faces, there’s a Huawei Watch for everyone.
What was your inspiration behind creating the Huawei Watch?
Huawei Watch was inspired by classic, luxury wristwatches. Our consumer research indicated a desire for a smartwatch that paid homage to the classic wristwatch, balancing utility and fashion. Huawei Watch maintains the same proportions you’d expect, with a round face and display, standard lug sizing and traditional crown. We visited Switzerland, home to some of the world’s foremost watchmakers, to understand what makes a watch classic. That experience was crucial to conceptualizing what Huawei Watch could be.
What value does the Huawei Watch have that makes it stand out against other wearables in the space?
Unlike a lot of other smartwatches that are very obviously gadgets, Huawei Watch is a watch first. A user could easily wear it to a formal event or a business meeting and it would look right at home. We used premium materials, including cold-forged stainless steel with 23 karat rose gold plating, and scratch-resistant Sapphire crystal – a first for Android Wear smartwatches. The craftsmanship is superior. More than 160 steps are done by hand in the manufacturing process.
What was your greatest challenge when making the Huawei Watch and what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned so far?
The greatest challenge was balancing the need for the watch to be both stylish and functional – finding a way to work within the classic watch design, but integrate it with all the latest technology that makes a smartphone smart. Others have tried with mixed results – we were determined to balance smart features with classic design, and through focus and perseverance, we achieved our goal.
What can we expect from Huawei in the future?
Huawei enjoyed phenomenal growth in 2015 and we are excited for 2016. An Android Wear update announced by Google will be rolling out to Huawei Watches in the near future. Soon, Huawei Watches will be able to play sounds within apps, have audible alarms, play video messages and even take calls.
Huawei Watch has done extremely well so far and there is a chance we may introduce new models to satisfy consumer demand. Beyond that, we are always working on expanding our U.S. product portfolio to offer consumers quality devices, whether wearables, tablets, or smartphones.
There are eight Huawei Watch models to choose from with prices ranging from $349 to $799. Consumers can purchase one through GetHuawei.com, the Google Store, Amazon.com or BestBuy.com.
