Fashion Tech Startup: Meet Slaint

Fashion Tech Startup: Meet Slaint

We’ve featured quite a few startups who’ve created fashion tech bags aimed toward a women audience, and now we’re delighted to tell you about one for men (and ladies who prefer masculine styling.) SLAINT makes luxury bags for men with built in tech. We spoke with Slaint’s Founder and Managing & Creative Director, Eoin Cooney, who told us more.

Describe Slaint.

Slaint (pronounced Slain-t) is a technology enhanced fashion brand. It was created to bridge the gap between the fashion and technology industries. We create unique, beautiful products that incorporate technology in a way that enhances the user’s day to day life.

What inspired you to start Slaint?

The idea behind Slaint is to become the first technology enhanced fashion brand. We want to create beautiful products that integrate technology in a way that actually enhances the user’s day to day life. A lot of fashion companies are dabbling in technology but none have made it part of their identity and the functions of the products are, for the most part, a gimmick. Tech startups are amazing at coming up with new technology but ultimately fail when comes to aesthetic which is equally important. Some luxury brands have produced bags which are sold with a phone charger inside but none have properly integrated the technology, none charge laptops and most surprisingly of all none are targeted towards men. In addition to all this we have the first product in the world that can charge MacBooks, without infringing on Apple patents, which is a pretty big deal.

Tell us about your products and how they incorporate technology.

We have created a range of luxury leather bags with a built in charging system for all of user’s portable devices. Our products are totally innovative and different to anything on the market, they are the first product in the world that can charge MacBooks on the go due to the design and development of our proprietary connectors. No other brand is offering this type of product yet. All of the bags feature a special section to house the battery charger and a separate opening in the side of the bag to access it. The charger comes with a range of adapters for most countries allowing users to leave all of their chargers and adapters at home, taking the hassle out of travelling or working on the go. Our 12,000mAh battery, which is the smallest and lightest laptop battery on the market, can charge a laptop and two USB devices simultaneously. Our holdall bag features a reinforced base section for a user’s laptop with a magnetic letterbox style opening allowing quick easy access without opening the bag which is ideal when travelling. All of the bags feature a designated section for a user’s laptop, tablet, and phone. All of these devices can be charged both inside and outside the bag. In addition to this, there are many other unique design features that set our products apart from your average bag.

What value does Slaint have that makes it stand out against other startups in the space?

  • Laptop charging
  • MacBook charging
  • Designed specifically for portable devices
  • Unique design features like side openings or reinforced laptop base
  • Looks like a luxury fashion bag rather than a “tech” bag
  • Made from the best materials by leather specialists
  • Smallest, lightest portable laptop battery on the market
  • Adapters for most countries included

What has been the hardest obstacle for you in creating your products? What has been your favorite part?

The biggest obstacle we have faced was making a product that could charge MacBooks because the Apple MagSafe connector is patented and they don’t offer a license for this. That is the reason that users cannot buy portable batteries for charging their laptops. My favorite part is the design and product development, coming up with innovative solutions for difficult problems.

Where can we buy your products and what is the cost?

You can buy our products from our website. We are also selling on platforms like NJAL, The Iconic and Unseen. The products range from £400-£700 depending on the bag but they all offer the same functionality.

What can we expect in the future from Slaint?

We are currently focusing on making our products fully modular, customisable and upgradable. By designing and producing the fashion and technology elements independently we want to allow customers to upgrade/customise each part of the product separately without having to buy the whole thing each time. This allows us to stay relevant from both a technology and fashion perspective and will create a more ecologically sustainable business model, which is something that is missing in both the fashion and technology industries. In time we will apply the same principles to other categories such as clothing, footwear and eyewear but our focus will remain to create unique, beautiful products that incorporate technology in a way that enhances the user’s day to day life.
